Library Launches Seed Lending Program

Community members looking to grow their own gardens have an extra resource up their sleeve this year. This February, the Sewickley Public Library launches a new Seed Library program creating a resource for finding, growing and sharing seeds. The library is excited to partner with the Big Sewickley Creek Watershed Association and the Bell Acres Environmental Advisory Council to bring this seed lending project to the community.

The Seed Library lets visitors “borrow” seeds for vegetables, fruits, herbs, and flowers, plant them at home, and then share the seeds from their plants at the end of the season with others. Through this seed swap, the library aims to build a diverse and accessible collection that is meant for all levels of gardeners – from beginners with small garden beds to more experienced green thumbs with larger growing spaces.

Benefits of a Seed Library:

  • Sustainability: It encourages individuals to grow their own food, promoting a sustainable lifestyle and an interest in local and seasonal produce.
  • Biodiversity: The growth of different types of plants helps support local ecosystems and promote biodiversity.
  • Community: By creating a space for gardeners to come together, share knowledge, and trade seeds, the program fosters a sense of collaboration and community spirit.

How it Works:

To participate, community members can “borrow” seeds from the display in the library lobby. Everyone is encouraged to take only what you can plant this season. Plant the seeds at home and watch them grow!  At the end of the growing season, participants are encouraged to save seeds from their plants and return them to the library to share. There is no cost, but returning seeds helps keep the program running.
