Sewickley Public Library is proud to announce that it has received the 2026 Architectural Preservation Award from the Sewickley Valley Historical Society, recognizing the library’s long and continued demonstration of excellence in the historic preservation of its building and grounds.
This year’s award specifically honors the creation of Broadside Terrace, the library’s newly reimagined outdoor gathering space that opened to the public last fall. While Broadside Terrace offers a fresh new place for the community to gather, read, and connect, its design was rooted in preserving and honoring the library’s historic 1923 architecture.
The project was thoughtfully designed by architect Nathan St. Germain of Studio St. Germain, who worked intentionally to ensure the new terrace felt like a natural extension of the original building. Architectural details, materials, and stonework were selected to complement the library’s historic character, creating a seamless blend of old and new.
The surrounding landscape, a vision from landscape designer Elise Keely of E.K. Smith Designs, was planned with equal care, featuring lush native plantings chosen not only for their beauty but for their sustainability and long-term compatibility with the site. Special attention was given to selecting species appropriately sized for the space and with root systems that will protect the integrity of the building’s foundation for years to come.
Made possible through the generosity of Carol and Gary Schurman, Broadside Terrace reflects the library’s ongoing commitment to thoughtful stewardship, historic preservation, and community connection. Today, the space serves as an inviting outdoor extension of the library—hosting programs, conversations, and quiet moments alike—while honoring the rich history of this beloved community institution.
