About the Friends
The FRIENDS OF THE SEWICKLEY PUBLIC LIBRARY (501c3) was formed in 1993 to encourage financial support of the library, increase awareness and utilization of the library’s resources, and to support the library staff and board of trustees. Through events such as Savoring Sewickley, Spring Bound and book sales, the Friends continue to help build the foundation for life-long learning and library usage. By providing funds for programming such as Battle of the Books, new iPad kiosks, and reference area doors, the Friends enhance and support the resources of the Sewickley Public Library.
Since 1947, there had been a Sewickley Public Library Society. This group would raise funds for the library for specific needs, such as a new furnace, and other miscellaneous repairs. The Friends wanted to reach out to all aspects of our community, particularly during the 1993 capital campaign for the library addition. Some of the early fundraisers included mystery theater dinner, concerts in the park, doodles fundraiser, art show of children’s book illustrators and large once-a-year (gently used) book sales at an outside venue.
