Your library card gives you access to print and digital collections, public computers, extensive databases and the collections of 70+ libraries across Allegheny County.
Getting a Library Card
Pennsylvania Residents
Library cards are issued free of charge to all Pennsylvania residents. This card can be used at the Sewickley Public Library and all public libraries in Allegheny County. As long as you use your card every two years, it will remain active. You can get a library card in person at the Library or apply for a library card online. Online cards applications are available to ages 18+ only at this time.
To apply for a library card in person:
- Visit the Circulation Desk at the library. All applicants must show an up-to-date photo identification with your current address. If you do not have a photo ID with a current address, you must bring in a photo ID plus proof of your current address.
- The signature of a parent or guardian is required for children under age thirteen (13).

- Driver’s License
- Pennsylvania ID Card
- Learner’s Permit
- Passport
- I9 Identification card
- State ID
- Military ID
- Student ID
- Medical Insurance Card (if picture included)
- Permanent Resident Card (Green Card)
Acceptable forms of Proof of Address include:
- Driver’s License/State ID
- Vehicle registration card
- Vehicle insurance card
- Medical insurance card (address included)
- I9 Identification card
- Signed lease/rental agreement
- Property tax receipt
- Utility bill*
- Paycheck*
- Bank statement*
- Credit Card statement*
- School report card for current school year
- Documentation on official school letterhead carrying student’s address
- Postmarked mail*
- *Dated within 4-6 weeks
If you already have a card from another public library in Allegheny County, you can start using it at Sewickley Public Library today.
Out-of-State Residents
As a resident outside of Pennsylvania, you will be asked to pay a $60.00 “Out-of-State” fee to register for a library card. This card must be renewed every two years—with a new $60.00 fee—to ensure continued access.
To apply for an out-of-state library card in person:
- Visit the Circulation Desk to apply. All applicants must show an up-to-date photo identification with your current address. If you do not have a photo ID with a current address, you must bring in a photo ID plus proof of your current address.
To apply for an out-of-state library card online:
- Visit selfreg.einetwork.net to submit your application. (If you already have a card and need to renew, go to step 2.) The following will be required:
- An email address.
- A $60.00 out-of-state registration fee paid online. This fee covers two years of library access.
- A picture of your photo ID.
- Once you have a library card number, visit aclaoutofstatecard.org to pay the registration fee.
- Send the payment receipt and a picture of your photo ID to acla@aclalibraries.org to verify.
Library Card Policies
Borrowing
- Borrowers are responsible for all use made of their library card.
- It is the responsibility of parents or guardians to supervise and monitor their children’s borrowing practices.
- There is no limit to the total number of materials which may be borrowed at a time. However, staff may limit magazines at their discretion.
- Lost cards may be replaced for a fee of $1.00.
Loan Periods
- Three (3) Weeks:

- DVDs (with a run time of more than 360 minutes)
- One (1) Week:
- DVDs (with a run time of less than 360 minutes)
- Music CDs
- Video Games
- Magazines
Renewals
The library offers automatic renewals on eligible items. Item due dates are automatically renewed up to six (6) times.
An item will NOT be automatically renewed if:
- It is an item that does not offer renewals (like bestseller copies of new books or wifi hotspots)
- The item is requested by another patron
- The item was already renewed six (6) times
- A patron’s account has more than $35 in fees and is not eligible to check out materials until payment is made
To check the status of the item(s) you have checked out, you can review your items via My Account on the Catalog. Call the Circulation Desk at 412-741-6920 (extension 2) with any questions about renewals.

- Stop in and request items at the Reference Desk.
Fines
Sewickley Public Library is a fine-free library. Overdue fines are not charged on items returned after the due date. Restrictions apply. Read the FAQ for more info.
- Borrowers will be charged a fee for items that are lost, damaged, or never returned.
- Refunds will not be made for lost items which after being paid for have been found.
- Borrowers will receive due-date notifications for items past their due date (if not eligible for renewal). If the item is six weeks overdue, a bill to replace the item will be issued.
- Accounts whose fees exceed $35.00 will have their borrowing privileges suspended.
