Hand holding seed over dirt to plant

Community members looking to grow their own gardens will once again have an extra resource up their sleeve. Beginning March 1, the Sewickley Public Library’s Seed Library returns, offering a place to find and share seeds with fellow gardeners.

Created in partnership with the Big Sewickley Creek Watershed Association and the Bell Acres Environmental Advisory Council, this seed lending project allows visitors to “borrow” seeds for vegetables, fruits, herbs, and flowers, plant them at home, and share seeds from their harvest at the end of the season.

The goal is to build a diverse, accessible collection for gardeners of all experience levels—from beginners with small garden beds to seasoned green thumbs with larger growing spaces.

How to participate:

  • Browse the Seed Library display in the library lobby
  • Use provided envelopes to take only what you can plant this season
  • Grow your seeds at home
  • Save and return seeds at season’s end to help the program thrive

There is no cost to participate, though returning seeds helps keep the program growing.

Whether you’re a gardening pro or just getting started, the Seed Library is a great way to learn, grow, and connect. Stop by the library to explore seeds, discover recommended gardening reads, and dig into the season ahead!
