Back by popular demand, artist Hiromi Katayaka teaches students the Sumi-e Japanese Ink Painting artform. Participants will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the tranquil and meditative practice of Sumi-e, discovering the beauty in simplicity and the power of each brushstroke. Sumi-e is ink painting on thin rice paper using sumi ink and bamboo brushes with expressive brush strokes. This workshop will include a history of Sumi-e painting in Japan, demonstrations, step-by-step instruction, and a final aquatic life themed project that each participant will complete.
Artist Hiromi Katayama is a native of Ibaraki, Japan who received her BFA in Japanese Traditional Painting from Joshibi University of Art and Design and an MFA in Painting from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania.
The event will be held on Wednesday, February 26, 2025 from 1:00pm – 3:00pm in the Community Room. All necessary materials will be provided and all levels of experience are welcome. There is a $5 materials fee to register. Registration is required and spaces are limited, so be sure to reserve your spot early. This is a unique opportunity to learn from a talented artist and to create a personalized piece of art.
